I was wearing a Dead t-shirt yesterday when I dropped off a vacuum to be repaired. As I was explaining the problem, the guy behind the counter unbuttoned his shirt to reveal a Stealie with “Steal Your Freedom” written under it. He explained he got the shirt when Jerry Brown ran for governor the first time. Does anyone remember the shirt or slogan?

He also said that the doesn’t keep up with the band because all the young guys in the store won’t let him listen to hippie music!

Who our Moonbeam? Like him or hate him I am glad he stabilized California; my beloved state. Met him in 1991(?) when he was running for president after a rally in Olympia, Washington. My roommate and a rainbow family brother 'freewind' was his local campaign representative. Those who didn't like 'freewind' called him 'downwind' for those interested. But I digress; Jerry B. was polite and friendly when I met him in the whirl wind after party. A true politician that one.

It's funny because when he went out with Linda R, in the 70s, he was "our" liberal candidate (I know, I know, pathetic...but the myth was true, right?), and now he's the opposite, just absolutely WHACKO, it seems to me...

Position on the absolute clusterfuke that IS solar energy in the Mohave Desert: "...some opposition you have to CRUSH" (quote, regarding those concerned that all the panels that could neatly fit in the median area of Interstate 10 will be placed on PRISTINE desert so as to "use" the unused public lands [and thereby crush the desert tortoise, of which the human being is a friend]).

Suppose we have to ask BD and CC to chime in and give us their views: how bad is Jerry Brown, and how much freedom is he taking these days?

I know nothing...

Jerry Brown is in Sacramento? Who knew? Freedom's just another word for... we now have a budget surplus?

"California Uber Alles"

I am Governor Jerry Brown
My aura smiles
And never frowns
Soon I will be president... [NOPE, didn't happen]

Carter Power will soon go away [WELL, his grandson did distribute Romney's 47% video that doomed Mitt]
I will be Fuhrer one day
I will command all of you
Your kids will meditate in school
Your kids will meditate in school!

[Chorus:]
California Uber Alles
California Uber Alles
Uber Alles California
Uber Alles California

Zen fascists will control you
100% natural
You will jog for the master race
And always wear the happy face

Close your eyes, can't happen here
Big Bro' on white horse is near
The hippies won't come back you say
Mellow out or you will pay
Mellow out or you will pay!

[Chorus]

Now it is 1984
Knock-knock at your front door
It's the suede/denim secret police
They have come for your uncool niece

Come quietly to the camp
You'd look nice as a drawstring lamp
Don't you worry, it's only a shower
For your clothes here's a pretty flower.

DIE on organic poison gas
Serpent's egg's already hatched
You will croak, you little clown
When you mess with President Brown
When you mess with President Brown

Exactly, for the first time in well over a decade when Enron stuck it to then Governor Gray Davis, California is finally back in the black. It hasn't exactly been a pleasant process but you’ve got to keep your financial house in order to remain competitive in the global marketplace.

Jerry had a good mentor in terms of his old man Edmund G “Pat” who was viewed by many as something of a progressive and championed many popular programs for the folks of California in regards to the aqueduct, higher education, fair employment and the state economic development projects to name just a few.

Unfortunately his popularity began to decline after the Watts Riots, The Free Speech Movement UC Berkeley and his stance on the death penalty which eventually gave rise to the Reagan’s legacy in office.

I think Jerry is determined to see the "High Speed Rail" project as his legacy!

I think they were supposed to perform their ode to Gov Brown and Californism at the Bammies in 1980 when they did this one instead. Phil was always getting the Best Bass award, so maybe he got to enjoy this one. It's hysterical -- "My Payola" riff, "guitar solo," classic lyrics. Go Jello!

Jerry has his faults, but after the disaster that was Arnold I believ that he is probably the best thing that could have happened to California.

I'm honestly not that familiar with the solar panel controversy, but sure, he's more conservative than he used to be. Aren't we all?

My opinion of Jerry was formed many years ago by Joan Didion and I'm sticking with it.

Link doesn't work to the right section, but it's the chapter called Many Mansions.

yeah, I shouldn't be too hard on the guy (but the clips do seem to make him out to be a douche)...to be honest, I left the Golden State in 79 and other than coming back for family reunions and a few DEAD shows, never kept up (except with the Raiders AND the Niners; Lakers too). I do recall thinking quite highly of JB way back when...I am way too old and too cynical these days.

If it weren't for the natural beauty that abounds in this state, that festering, abscessed, pus-filled abomination of a governor would have chased me out of my compound.

As it is, I'm pretty sure I can out last the leathery old crone.

I remember the days when Cali had the best schools and was the motion that stirred the ocean of American culture. (Cue the motto of the Pranksters...)

I went to school in CA in the 70's. The school system SUCKED! And that was before the prop 13 sharp pointy stick to your own eye took all the money and put it in the pockets of the real estate lobby. I had moved there from suburban Chicago after the 6th grade ('72 ish) and it was like going from the 7th grade back to the 4th grade. Was way cool for a month or two, but then things got really boring. You had to be dumb as a rock to not be able to get through the "acedemics" of the CA schools.

Now surviving the cultural aspects is what took some brains and spiritual assistance.

If it wasn't for the GD I wouldn't have survived it.

Good point re: solar panels in the median. There are those amazing photos from Germany where the sides and median of their highway is absolutely covered in solar panels. Now THAT is appropriate usage of marginal space! It's crazy that our regulatory bodies would rather desert be destroyed than have truly marginal space be utilized. Yargh

But then the regulatory bodies might have to look at it from their cars. Which would ruin the esthetic experience of commuting. Whereas chances are pretty good they've got no interest in seeing the desert.

And poor Germany, I suppose they've got no wildlands left to destroy. Oh wait. What's on the other side of that solar panel? And who told Germany they had any sun?!?

Yes well perhaps they could look at those miles of solar panels with pride, knowing they did right for their people and the planet!

Alas, it appears that the regulatory bodies' stocking stuffers will be lumps of coal yet again.

Moonbeam living in his car instead of the Governor's mansion? The same guy? He and Linda in the back of 67 Plymouth?

I left CA in 1983, been back since, seems like it was always post apocolyptic. Saw the DK's at the Mabuhay at about the time of that video - my ears are still ringing.

This should be the Faux News theme song:

http://tinyurl.com/bvtpqnm

I was just forced to spend a week exposed to the ranting and raving...and I mean RANTING and RAVING!!!!!! THEY SHOUT THE WHOLE TIME! Kind of like when you talk to a person who doesn't speak English so you just talk louder and then get mad when they still don't understand you. It was kind of fun to look up the rant and rave topics from other sources just to see the context of the rant...but that is intentionally not seeing the Emperor's cloths...and spoiling the whole cathartic point of the Fox News thing. Anger just feels so good! I like how their news channel is uber conservative while their regular programming is the sleaziest, occult based, psycho drivle on the tube.

My, how legends grow. Lived in his car, did he?

Jerry kept his two bedroom apartment in downtown Sacramento instead of moving into the brand-new mansion the Reagans built. And he paid his own rent.

hyperbole... He did drive an old Plymouth though.

I lived there at the time and found it quite entertaining.

Plus Linda was a major hottie.

California has always been on the front lines of wierdness.

Sometimes I miss it.
